How to Start a Harry Potter Collection Without Wasting Money

Updated October 2026 · 6 min read

There is a moment, usually around the second keychain, when a fan stops buying souvenirs and starts building a collection. The problem is that nobody tells you where to begin — so people buy randomly for two years, end up with four of the same crest, and lose interest.

This is the short version of what we tell customers who ask. It is not about spending more. It is about picking a spine for the collection first, then letting everything else hang off it.

Rule one: pick a house, or pick a format. Not both.

Collections that hold together have one organising idea. Either one house, everything (all Slytherin, in every format), or one format, all houses (badges only, four houses, deliberately). Mixing both ends in a shoebox of loose pieces that never gets displayed.

The second route is usually cheaper and looks better on a wall: four high-relief house crest badges in a row, or the seven-design tin badge set pinned to a cork board, reads as intentional. The first route is more satisfying if the person is genuinely house-loyal — a Slytherin gift box set is a ready-made starting point.

Start with blind boxes, not grails

The mistake beginners make is chasing the expensive piece first. Blind boxes are the better entry point because they teach you what you actually like, at $3.99 a go. The 24-piece keychain blind box, the charm blind box and the translucent PVC card blind box all have real chase pieces, and duplicates become trade stock instead of regret.

Once you know which characters you care about, then you buy the display piece — and you buy it once.

The display tier

Three formats carry most collections. Standees are the cheapest way to fill a shelf: the acrylic scene standees give you five characters to line up, and the desktop standee blind box adds the chase element. Badges are the classic — flat, cheap to frame, easy to trade. Prop replicas are the ones guests pick up: a fold-out Marauder's Map at $4.99 or the film-prop print version at $1.99 both do the job, and the pocket watch gift box is the piece that makes people ask where it came from.

How to display it without a glass cabinet

For the collector who has everything: the Mirror of Erised miniature has a real reflective surface and is the piece most likely to start a conversation — it is the closest thing here to an actual prop.
